About

An aerial view

THE Nairobi Gymkhana offers a diverse selection of programs and classes in addition to our Leagues and Kids activities. The club has invested in a number of outdoor sports that could be enjoyed at the club. It was an attempt to provide more recreation other than what it is well known for which is Cricket. How the club members get to enjoy the indoor activities with their friend and family. This is also a way to bond and catch up after a stressful days activity.

A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE

Swimming

Swimming is an individual or team sport that requires the use of one’s entire body to move through water. Competitive swimming is one of the most popular olympic sports, with varied distance events in butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and individual medley.

In addition to these individual events, four swimmers can take part in either a freestyle or medley relay. Nairobi Gymkhana is aimed at providing a facility and personnel to develop the above skills and talent.

Snooker

Snooker is a cue sport which originated among British Army officers stationed in India in the later half of the 19th century. It gained its own identity in 1884 when army officer Sir Neville Chamberlain, while stationed in Ooty, devised a set of rules that combined pyramid and black pool.

The World Snooker Championship has taken place since 1927, with Joe Davis becoming a key figure in the early growth of the sport winning the championship fifteen times from 1927 to 1946.

Badminton

Badminton is a racquet sport played using racquets to hit a shuttlecock across a net. Although it may be played with larger teams, the most common forms of the game are “singles” (with one player per side) and “doubles” (with two players per side).

Badminton is often played as a casual outdoor activity in a yard or on a beach; formal games are played on a rectangular indoor court. Members enjoy playing for leisure, and we also hold tournaments for the various academies that we house.

Cricket

Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a 20-metre (22-yard) pitch with a wicket at each end. Historically, cricket’s origins are uncertain and the earliest definite reference is in south-east England in the middle of the 16th century.

It spread globally with the expansion of the British Empire, leading to the first international matches in the second half of the 19th century.he sport is followed primarily in the Indian subcontinent.

Squash

Squash was invented in Harrow School out of the older game rackets around 1830 before the game spread to other schools, eventually becoming an international sport. The first courts built at this school were rather dangerous because they were near water pipes, buttresses, chimneys, and ledges.

The school soon built four outside courts. Natural rubber was the preferred material for the ball. Students modified their rackets to have a smaller reach to play in these cramped conditions.

Archery

3D Archery takes the archery range into the woods, introduces unique angles, and creates new ways to have fun with a bow. This discipline gets its name from the three-dimensional animal targets that challenge archers at each station. The targets range from small skunks to massive elk, and are set along a course that resembles a hiking trail.
